Fault_code P0135: Faulty Oxygen Sensor 1

Recently there was a short "beep" and a brief reminder "Depollution System Faulty" displayed on the MFD followed by the Engine Warning Light on the dashboard every time after starting the engine.

Using eTuner Lionheart for the diagnostic... got fault code P0135 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction [Bank 1 Sensor 1] which means the Oxygen Sensor #1 needs replacement.

Local Spare Part Shops and Auta-rized Service Centers quoted between RM800 ($240) to as high as RM1300 ($390) to replace the sensor!

After eBaying for a while I got a reasonable priced original Bosch O2 sensor, $132.98  (cost including express shipping with tracking info) from AutoBody Shop in Latvia.

on the LHS is the faulty sensor

Replacing the sensor is easier than replacing a spark plug on Peugeot 308THP!. Can be done by DIY. Special tool needed is only a 22mm open end spanner/wrench.

Hi,

Firstly, thanks for all the useful information here. This is great resource for all Pug 308 owners.
I currently own the 308 Facelift version.

This is slightly out of scope for this post, but can you please advise on the headlamps? I understand you had a post where you changed yr headlights to HID. As my car is still under warranty, I wouldnt want to meddle with the actual headlamp and would just like to change to a brighter bulb. What type of bulb can I change to specifically Halogen 55W. I would want white light as I understand the visuals are much brighter at night.

Muhammad Alif: It is upstream, i.e atop exhaust manifold. Quite easy to replace it. What you need is a 22mm open end spanner.

Jason: HID kit is very cheap now. For a pair of H7 HID bulbs c/w ballasts cost around RM100++ i.e about the same price as Osram "Night Breaker" halogens. HID kits are "plug and play" - i.e no need to modify wiring. All connectors/adapters are provided.

Even Though HID kits can be installed easily they still need projector lenses. Without which, the unfocused HID intensity will cause nuisance to the other road users.

Why not install HID conversion kit for the fog lights (H8) first. No need to install projector lens for these lights. 35W HID's are as bright if not brighter than 100W halogens.

thnx for the updated pic :)

Thanks but still prefer the change in bulbs. Too afraid of warranty at the moment.
Any particular bulb or brand you can recommend? Also, can you recommend a good shop to install
thank you sifu

Osram Night Breaker and Philips X-treme Vision are amongs the best halogen replacement bulbs. These bulbs can deliver up to 100% more brightness than standard halogens.

Finally decided to purchase Phillips Extreme Vision, at 5000K.
Slightly hint of blue although once it warms up its more white.
Is this illegal?
I understand anything above 5K is illegal but no one has mentioned 5K so far.

Wan A. Hadi (one.D) said...

Color Temperature Legal limit is 4700K but 5000K still OK for low beams I think. For high beams it is advisable to use color temperatures less than 4000K for longer range and better contrast.

Many ppl use 6000K or even more which is not usefull when it rains at night.

I'm using 4300K HID H7 bulbs for low beams and 3700K Osram Nighbreaker Plus H1 bulbs for high beams. Standard halogen bulb color temperatures are around 3200K.

As salam tuan, my 308vti arini kuar error anti pollution fault. Dari carian di google, ada byk sebab. Petrol quality, sensor and etc. Dengan tukar the same sensor seperti kereta tuan, does it fix the problem? FYI, i did reset on ecu by cabut kepala bateri. So far mcm ok, cuma bimbang ada lagi error. Is it safe to drive kalau ada error ni. Since semua ok, enjin running, temp ok. Boleh jalan mcm biasa except icon engine is on kat meter. Please advice n tq!

Need quick help on my 308 vti. Year 2009. Mileage 133k km. Problems: just now, an error "anti pollution fault" with beep sound and engine icon on meter turn on. Engine temp normal, can start normally. Can drive normally. (Safely arrived from starting point to my house about 35km). Can anyone suggest what to do and to check? Is it safe to drive another 120-150km? Because the nearest service center is peugeot kuala terengganu. I often heard this error for 308 turbo n not on v

It is safe to drv the car with depollution fault but fuel consumption increases as high as 20%. I had been driving 308 for a couple of month and travelled over 400km non stop without any problem while waiting for the Oxygen sensor frm eBay. Don't worry.

tq tuan for ur kind reply. Just wondering, are you the same person who recommend german garage bangi for a/c jobs in PCM's FB? And can I send my car to your place for quick scan for any faults on my vti? hehehe :)

Correct. Where are you frm? Outside Klang Valley?

Hi Richard,
Oxygen Sensor #1 and Oxygen Sensor #2 are different.

Hi author. I hv some bad experience with sc. I had once the "oxy sensors up&down stream trigger fault". The technician replaced it costs rm1.6k. Then i drove out the sc not more than 3 hours the engine light came up again. I went back to sc and they found exactly the same fault code. But niw they said oxy sensors fault means the catalytic converter problem & need to replace. They said its normal thing when odo reaches 80kkm. It costs rm5k! Btw does it mean that i replaced the oxy sensors in the first place for nothing? Pls help.

Hi author. I find ur blog really useful. I had "engine fault repair needed" once. And i sent to SC they put on BOD and fault code shown was "oxy sensor trigger fault upstrm&downstrm". Guess what the technician advised me to? Replace both sensors. And i stupidly gave them the green light which cost me rm1.6k. After that, not more than 3 days the engine light came up again. I sent to sc again and the same fault appeared. Now they said actually oxy sensors fault means that the catalytic converter problem. Need to replace it n costs rm5k. What the heck with them? Does it mean i replaced the oxy sensors in the first place for nothing? Pls help

Before replacing anything else better check spark plugs and ignition coil packs. I always keep one extra fresh spark plug an an ignition coil pack in my car as first aid kit. Cost less than RM200.

Wan A. Hadi (one.D) said...

Faulty spark plug and/or damaged ignition coil pack give similar "depolultion system faulty" warning.

P0135 fault code on my 308 vti also. Only 35000 miles (2008) so quite surprised. Agree that the new sensor was easy to replace and fault cured in May 2015. Fault has occurred again in September 2015. The code actually states heater element failure and the sensor works fine with a warm engine giving 40+ mpg - high 20's when cold. Is there a possible known fault that burns out the heater elements or is this failure just a coincidence?

Hi, it may have been mentioned somewhere already but can you recommend a reliable and trustworthy workshop in Klang Valley that specialize in Peugeot 5008 downstream & upstream O2 sensor issues. Found out no point to send to their main service centres for warranty work as they re-set all faults each time you send the car there, as they probably do not make money doing warranty work

Hi, I have question regarding oxygen sensors. Last Saturday my car(5008) shown an Engine Management Faulty error code and I brought it to SC to diagnosed. Their diagnostic tool shown Oxygen Sensor short circuited and quoted RM2.2K to replace both sensors. The engine didn't experience any abnormality, it was smooth and powerful as before. The error code off by itself when I restart the car after a short drive and never shows up since 2 days. I suspected it was due to water that I spray toward the radiator while washing the car that cause the short circuit. Anyway my question are:- (1) Assuming that error code never come again, Can I assume that it is working fine? (2) If there is a need to replace, do you have any recommended website or shop to buy from?
