Marathon Fuel Consumption

It was a night-marathon (round trip) to and fro Kelantan during recent Hari Raya covering a total distance of more than 1100km.

The average fuel consumption on RON95 for the entire trip was 7.1liter/100km (14km/liter). Not too bad for an aged marathoner I think. If you are a sprinter probably your Peugeot THP would consume at least 50% more fuel!

Lowest Fuel Consumption with Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra!

[updated version on June 7th 2011]

After 'flushing' my 308T combustion chambers with a few tanks of the new Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra I decided to carry out actual tests for the fuel consumptions on different kind of driving conditions covering more than 1200km.

BBBangi - Simpang Pulai - Gua Musang - Machang & around Kelantan - Kuala Berang-Kuantan - KLumpur - BBBangi.
Day 1: June 4th 2011
Sector 1: Economy Drive [215km] - 'warming-up lap' with auto-cruise without exceeding speed limits on PLUS from BBBangi to Simpang Pulai.

Average Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra Consumption: 5.8liter/100km
The Best Fuel Consumption running on normal RON95 fuel was 6.2liter/100km


Sector 2: Pushing 308T to the Limits [152km] - Crossed Main Range by driving-up winding road from Simpang Pulai to Blue Valley, stopped about 45minutes to buy farm produce then continued with downhill challenge all the way to Gua Musang. At Gua Musang stopped for lunch.

Average Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra Consumption: 8.8liter/100km. Last test using normal RON95 fuel was 9.9liter/100km.

Sector 3: Normal Driving with lots of Traffics [145km] - Anybody who drives at midday between Gua Musang to Kuala Krai, especially during holidays knows what kind of driving condition one has to endure.

Average Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra Consumption: 7.0liter/100km
Normal RON 95 fuel consumption for this sector was 7.6liter/100km

Overall Average fuel consumption on the new Petronas PRIMAX95 Xtra for the Day1 515km-trip (SKV-SimpangPulai-GuaMusang-Machang) is 6.9liter/100km.
The best average fuel consumption for similar trip on other RON95 fuel was 7.8liter/100km.

Day 2: June 5th 2011
Sector 4: Driving around Kelantan [104km] - Drove the car 'normally' around towns and along trunk roads, sometimes caught in traffic jams .... no hiways in Kelantan of course. Honestly I don't enjoy driving here.

Average Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra Consumption: 7.1liter/100km
Previous tests on normal RON95 never got less than 8liter/100km for driving the 308T around this 'gedebe & cas keting' state!

After travelling 620km on various types of road with different styles of driving the car consumed 44liters [3/4 tank] of Petronas PRIMAX 95 Xtra averaging 7liter/100km.
Balance 1/4 tank. Already topped up and ready for Day3 600km-return trip.

Day 3: June 6th 2011
Sector 5 - Non Stop Return Trip. Had to detour towards Kuala Berang before joining ECE due to heavy traffics on the way to Kuala Trengganu. Skipped passing over or stop at major towns. Reduced traveling distance from 620km to approx 590km.

40% Hi-ways [above 100km/hr] , 50% Trunk Roads [80~100km/hr] , 10% other roads [below 80km/hr]

Fuel left after 589km drive...

The over all fuel consumption for the 1209km journey was 84 liter [around RM160 @RM1.90/liter] of Petronas Primax 95 Xtra [PP95X].

The 225/45/17 CSC3 tyres had been abused at the end of their life at some points of this journey...

FC on RON95 is not good as RON97 for Peugeot308 turbo?

It seemed that AHW308 consumed 5~10% more RON95 fuel per 100km during previous 1500km Raya Trip than it took out of RON97 on earlier 2000km trip across Malayan Peninsular, but I forgot the traffic flows and the way I tekaned the accelerator pedal between the two trips were entirely different in fashion. So, I was WRONG to conclude that Peugeot 308Turbo consumes more fuel on RON95 than it does on RON97 .

Over the last weekend however, I had an opportunity to test similar car running on RON95 on similar route [as earlier trip on RON97] under almost similar 'controlled environment'. They were daylight trips from BBBangi to JB and back covering a total distance of approximately 600km. In both situations the car ran on AUTOcruise most of the time within legal speed limits. The aircond was set to 21degC throughout the trip.

Surprisingly I found that the average fuel consumption for both trips which run on RON97 and RON95 were almost identical. The trip computer displays below was taken at the end of the trip run on RON95.

The average RON95 fuel consumption for the 586km trip was:
6.2lit./100km i.e 11.16sen per km [@RM1.80/liter] or, 16.1km/liter or 45.8mpg!

For the 586km trip the car consumed RM 65.40 or 36.33liter of RON95 i.e slightly over 5/8 but less than 3/4 tank of fuel. The remaining fuel is more than enough for another trip to JB!!!

Now it is proven TRUE that in term of energy content there is no different between RON95 and RON97! [Click HERE to see fuel consumption for similar car running on RON97]

Next test is to compare high-rev performance [0~100km/hr acceleration and sustainable top speed] between RON95 and RON97.

The best average fuel consumption by my308 on RON95 was 6.0liter/100km [16.7 km/liter or 10.8sen/km] when the car was running constantly at 92km/hr read by the speedo [or exactly 90km/hr on the GPS] on a trip along PLUS covering 291km on October 4th. 2009.

Raya Travels on RON95

Raya Day 1 - Route: BBBangi-Seremban-SAlam-KL-BBB
Drove around Klang Valley. 308 Turbo consumes almost 10% more fuel than it takes out of RON97 on start-stop short distances urban driving. Probably due to severe traffic jam.

Raya Day 2 - Route: BBBangi-Raub-SKoyan-GMusang-KKrai-Machang [447km]
Drove from Bdr Baru Bangi to Machang at predawn via Bentung-Raub-Sungai Koyan-GMusang-KKrai. Seemed like no other car was on the road.

With family members in the car, I drove like a 'real' uncle - mostly on auto cruise between 60~100km/hr, averaging 78km/hr on approx. 450km journey in 5hr 45min.

Fuel consumption was 30.8 liters of RON95 [RM55.44], i.e 12.32sen/km or 6.9liter/100km or 14.5km/liter or 41mpg.

On RON97 normally 45mpg or 6.4liter/100km could be achieved whenever I drove economically like 'et. Looks like 308 turbo consumes 5% more fuel on RON95 diet. Apart from that I experienced some reduction in pulling torque. Probably the car was fully laden. Not sure untill I'd carried out fair tests under the same conditions to compare the performance between running on RON95 and RON97.

Raya Day 3, 4 & 5 - Route: Machang-PCondong-PMas-KB-PCB-Jeli-BMelintang-Machang [361km]
Drove 361km in three days around and trapped in infamous Kelantan Raya Traffic Jam especially to the 'TT de KB' @PCB.

The Turbo engine was also celebrating Raya and enjoying drinking RON95 at 9.6liter/100km or 17.28sen/km or 30mpg when driven in Kelantan.


Day 6 - Route: Machang-Besut-Penarik_Beach-KTrengganu-Kuala Brang-Jabor-Kuantan [351 km]
Left Kelantan towards Kuantan to stay overnite @ Gambang. The traffic between KTrengganu and Kuantan was very slow and congested. Crawled at below 70km/hr most of the time, and had to burn extra fuel up to three times more than normal during overtaking clusters of five to ten vehicles at a time... really appreciate the 240Nm of torque!


Raya Day 7 - Route: Kuantan-Maran-Jengka-Karak-KL-BBB [300km] .
This was the final sector. The real test which covered almost all driving conditions - such as auto-cruise economy driving, high-speed chasing, small roads [bypass to Jengka], slope climbing, and lastly damn heavy traffic from Genting Sempah all the way towards and on MRR2 and Seremban Highways...

...giving average fuel consumption of 8.2liter/100km or 12.2km/liter or 35mpg.



Summary:
In seven days I traveled almost 1500km. Average fuel consumption for all possible driving conditions on RON95 was 8.0liter/100km ...

... or 12.5km/liter or 14.4sen/km [@RM1.80/liter of RON95] or 35.5mpg.

BBBangi to and fro JB on 3/4 tank of fuel

Drove myPeugeot 308THP to JB Monday August 3rd and returned on 4th. Covering a total distance of 608km on just three-quarter tank of fuel [RM67.90] - lower than toll charges [RM77.40]

[Note: Full tank fuel capacity = 60 liters]

Overall fuel consumption for the 608km trip was 6.3liter/100km or 15.87km/liter or 45mpg, i.e 11.34sen per km.

Taking return trip only [305km] - fuel consumption was even better because there were less traffics in the city before midday - Fuel consumption was 6.2liter/100km or 16.13 km/liter, i.e 11.16sen/km.

Note: It paid off for driving within speed limits ... not only saved fuel but I escaped THREE counts of speed-trap roadblocks [Southbound: Tangkak and Kulai; Northbound: Air Keroh], not to mention "operasi saman ekor" along the expressway. Lossa cars, especially from Singa-pura2 kena saman.

Long-Distance AVERAGE Fuel Consumptions at different driving speeds and styles

myPeugeot 308 had just clocked around 6000km in almost 100 days. More than 75% were long-distance trips on Federal/Trunk Roads [non-Expressways] - covering approx. 1000km per return trip. The car was test-driven for AVERAGE fuel consumptions at almost all possible driving speeds/styles.

6.2~7.5liter/100km - 'Economy' driving on AutoCruise without exceeding speed limits.

7.0~8.5liter/100km - 'Normal' driving like most people drive. Sometimes on AutoCruise.

8.0~10.0liter/100km - 'Mixed' - Combination of 'Normal' and 'Spirited' driving styles.

9.5~12.0+liter/100km - 'Spirited' driving

[note: testing for speeds only - the GPS reads 3~4kph LOWER than the speedometer reading, the actual speed on speedometer was 210kph. Top speed was 214km/hr on the speedometer]

It is proven TRUE once again that 308THP is a frugal car when driven 'economically' - can be a thirsty lion when pushed hard for the performance though.

Words on Performance and Fuel Consumptions for Peugeot308 Turbo High Pressure [THP]

Peugeot 308 THP fuel consumption is the MOST sensitive to driving styles amongst *six [6] Peugeots I've ever owned and tested [now I only keep 4 of them].

Three in service...Another one [405GL] is kept in backyard garage for parts and as a DIY-guinea pig ... The latest is 308THP... When treated tenderly Peugeot 308THP is frugal than most 1.6-liter cars - it even consumes less fuel than Peugeot/Bestari 1.4 8v engines. However, when pushed hard its engine consumes more fuel than some cars with bigger capacity engines [1.8~2.0 liter category]. Of course the performance never come for free.

For instance, PSA-BMW EP6DT power plant under the hood of Peugeot 308 THP is able to pump out the number of horses similar to if not more than its n.a 2.0liter siblings used in CKD 407 and CBU 206GTi, while its torque even stronger than some 2.4liter n.a saloons - its handicap is only the weight [around 1.4 tonnes], but sprinting 0~100kph in just a few milli-seconds above 9sec mark and speeding around 180-190kph seems to be normal for those spirited drivers behind the steering wheels of this feline. Some are brave enough to explore 200+kph realm.

Peugeot 308THP is neither a saloon nor a hot-hatch, but it is something in between the two- a little bit from each of those.

Peugeot 308 THP can be either a frugal or a powerful 1.6 liter car - but not both at the same time. I would say it is a car with two engines in one. Just at the push of the accelerator pedal it will select which is which. Its AUTO-adaptive. I love it!

Conclusions
1. When driven 'steadily' between 75~95kph [using AutoCruise] on long distance trips Peugeot 308 THP fuel consumption can be achieved from 6.1liter to 6.7liter/100km [14~16km/liter or 42~46mpg].


2. Believe it or NOT! The range on one **full tank of RON97 fuel can be more than 1000km!
[**Note:The actual fuel tank capacity is slightly more than 60 liters when filled up to the brim]

3. The AVERAGE fuel consumption for the first 1~5km could be very high though. I've tested for the 308THP AVERAGE fuel consumption from the starting point during acceleration from 0~100kph and then kept driving at that speed beyond 10km.

first 01km: 15~25liter/100km [4~6km/liter]
first 03km: 12-15liter/100km [6~8km/liter]
first 05km: 09~12liter/100km [8~11km/liter]
first 10km: 07~09liter/100km [11~14km/liter]
beyond 10km: below 07liter/100km [more than 14km/liter]

Based on these figures I only drive myPeugeot 308 for long-distance trips - not only for the economic reasons, but also for the hi-speed fun should the need arises.

Is Peugeot 308 Auto with THP Power Plant a Frugal Car?

I've just returned home from 801.3km weekend trip [KL-Kelantan-KL] in myPeugeot 308 with a 60-liter fuel tank of RON97 w/o refuelling. Fuel/trip computer snapshots and manually calculated figures are available for comparison on the fuel consumptions.


1. From on-board Fuel/Trip Computer
The best average fuel consumption was 6.4liter/100km [16km/liter or 45mpg] on 307km* route from Machang to Raub.

[*Note: On AutoCruise without exceeding speed limits >5kph - AutoCruiser was set @ 75, 85 and 95kph wherever applicable respectively]

After Raub the traffic was no longger smooth flowing - there were 'convoys' of express buses, trailers and cars all the way prevented me from using AutoCruise. At times the speed was reduced to 50kph or less when trailing slow vehicles. It was Monday 27th around 4:00am~6:00am when I was driving from Raub to KL.

There are more accends than decends from KL to Kelantan hence more fuel consumption [6.7liter/100km] than going back to KL from Kelantan.
The average fuel consumption for the 800km drive was 6.6l/100km or thereabout as shown on the MFD .

[15.2km/liter or 43.3mpg]

Earlier, I left KL for Kelantan on Friday 24th around 4:00am. The actual KL-Kelantan[@Machang] point-to-point distance was 383km. I drove some distance further up to make it cukup2 400km [for 800km return trip]. See... after arriving @Machang, still got remaining fuel for another 500km as shown on the CDC - more than enough to burn along the way back home.


2. By Manual Calculation:
The amount I paid for the fuel used after returning from 801.3km trip was RM97.05 [i.e 53.9liter].

Hence, by calculation the average fuel consumption was 6.7liter/100km [14.9km/liter or 42.7mpg] on 801km

Since the amount of fuel used for the 800km drive was about 54liter, the expected range per full tank [60liter] will be 888.888km! While on-board fuel/trip computer tells 901.3km [801.3+100km]. "801.3km" is the distance travelled since the last refueling and "100km" is the remaining kilometer to go before 'EMPTY' as displayed on the MFD and CDC based upon the average fuel consumption for the last few kilometers sampling.

Only now, I can appreciate and enjoy steady driving on AutoCruise - not just driving w/o pumping the accelerator pedal, but most of the time I don't even need to touch it.

myPeugeot 308 Fuel Consumptions

Between March 14th ~ 20th, 2009 I traveled around two thousand kilometers on all types road in Peninsular Malaysia to test-drive Peugeot 308THP for reliability, handling, power, comfort as well as fuel consumptions.

Fuel Consumptions

As far as the fuel consumption is concerned, Peugeot 308 THP can be a relatively frugal car when pushed gently and steadily [w/o pumping] on the accelerator pedal at moderate speeds, but can be very thirsty when driven hard.

Note: Driving below 65kph increases fuel consumption inversely proportional to the speed at which AL4 sticks on 3rd or lower gears.

Achtung!: Flooring the accelerator pedal during 'taking-off' this little twin-scroll turbo engine will consume up to 30liter/100km [3.3km/liter] ! - during which never ask how many mpg, just ask how many gallon to a mile does 308THP consume...


Distance traveled: 2268km

Exceptional Conditions
1. Traffic Jam - along MRR2/Karak h/w on day1 school holiday rush hour.
Average fuel consumption: 11.8liter/100km [8.5km/liter or 24mpg!]

2. Start-Stop Driving - along Kelantan state/kampong roads while road-trackings for a local GPSmapping community.Average fuel consumption: 9.2liter/100km [10.9km/liter or 31mpg]

3. Economy Run - AutoCruise from Gua Musang to Machang . The traffic was smooth. Speed around 50~90kph.
Average fuel consumption: 7.3liter/100km [13.7km/liter or 39mpg]


Range
Between March 19th~20th, I drove 740km [excluding 40km remaining fuel in tank as displayed by the on-board trip computer] without refueling in between. Giving an average fuel consumption of 7.6liter/100km [13.2km/liter]
70% of the journey was on auto cruise within 10% speed limits.

On the last 50+km [about 7% ] the car was driven at almost full throttle on NS-highways at very high speeds "to introduce" what Peugeot 308Turbo is. Hee heeee...just kiddin'.

I can conclude that Peugeot 308 THP can easily be driven [at legal speeds] up to 800km w/o refueling , especially on auto cruise.
