The Ultimate Cree Q5 PROJECTOR LED for DRL 1157 bulb replacement

Sunday, Sept 11th., 2011
I had tested/used six sets of 1157 LED clusters for the 308 DRL's. All of them ended up as electronic garbage. Click HERE for more info.
The only reason for the failure is that those 1157 LED clusters do not have current limiting circuit hence not suitable for extended use as DRL's.

Finally I found 1157 5W Cree Q5 LED on eBay. The design makes it stand out from the rest.
The 'Projector bulb' comes with double lens for optimum optics.
... and make it 'ngam' with the retrofit HID projector headlight.
The 5W Cree Q5 LED brightness is comparable with the stock 21W tungsten-filament bulb even under bright sunlight .
Picture : comparison amongst the stock 1157 Tungsten-filament DRL, the new 5W Cree Q5 Projector LED and the 'Merc W212-like' LED strips.

uii...terang betul, even stock superbright led pun tak terang camnie, Uncle..did u encounter bulbs faulty alarm when using this led?

No problem as long as the current/wattage is less than the rated value.

e.g
HID is 35W against stock H7 55W halogen.

Cree LED is only 5W against stock 1157 tungsten filament 21W

Very, very cool! Uncle D, coincidentally there is a similar post on the FB 308 group asking about DRL replacement, hope you don't mind I will share the ebay URL and credit you for the link ?

Hi Uncle!
Have you encountered any led's burning out after few months of having this on? It is as reliable as you mentioned in the blog due to the circuitry? Been looking awhile for the right LED for my DRL on the 308.

Hi Melvin,
Been using those Cree Q5 LEDs for more than 4 months already. No problem so far.

Those Cree LEDs were bought frm USA. About 2x more expensive than equivalent LEDs price frm China. Not sure whether they are the same.

What is the brightness like when parking light is switched on? is it dimmer compare to erl?

Wan A. Hadi (one.D) said...

Kayeso... when sidelights (parking lights) or/and headlights are switched on the DRLs should be automatically switched off.

Of course the sidelights or parking lights are dimmer than the DRLs.

Thanx. Actually the question is for this led bulb, whether it works like ordinary ori bulb. So it is. Basically it has current limiting circuit Internally for side light to make it dimmer?

Wan A. Hadi (one.D) said...

There is an internal impedence for the sidelight terminal to make the LED less bright.

uncle

hows your cree q5 led drl doing? still going strong?

thanks

So far so good even after 1 yr because I swapped the bulb terminal to the one with a current limiting resistor.

hello nice thread :)
I'm currently looking into DRL LED bulbs for my 2009 Peugeot 308SW, do you remember what you have used for the terminal for current limiting? Is this the same like for canbus error load resistor?

Thank you
